Ramadhan is a month that full of blessing. One of the things that make Ramadhan special is this month is the month which Qur`an was revealed to mankind. It is not compulsory for Muslims to khatam(complete) the recitation of Quran from the beginning till the end, but we are in a loss if we don’t take this opportunity to read and tadabbur(contemplation) the Quran.

In the Qur`an Allah mentioned,

The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. (Quran 2:185)

Also, in Ramadhan, there is a special night (Laylat al-Qadr) that offers special rewards to those who make good deeds/’amal on that night. Recitation of the Quran can be part of the amal that we can practise.

“Allah has made Laylat al-Qadr in this month, which is better than a thousand months, as Allah says…The Night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Rooh [Jibreel (Gabriel)] by Allah’s Permission with all Decrees, there is peace until the appearance of dawn.” — Al-Qadr 97:1-5

Here are the steps that we can apply to khatam/ finish the Quran in Ramadhan.

  1. Set clear intention and goal

Every amal begin from niyyah (intention). It is important for us to have the awareness to khatam Quran in Ramadhan and make a goal in order to achieve it. Having strong niyyah will push us forward toward completing the goal.

  1. Be consistent

After having a goal, we need to be consistent with the daily reading. It is important to start small but consistent, rather than reading a lot only in the beginning and then stop in the middle of the journey before reaching the goal.

  1. Try to understand the meaning as much as you can

Understand the meaning of the verse of the Quran by reading its translation if you don’t understand Arabic. This will help us to get immersed in the recitation when we can feel that actually the Quran is interacting with us. Quran has really beautiful words and the messages in the Quran will make us more likely to read and take lessons from it.

  1. Don’t stop if you off track

It is fine if you are not able to achieve the goal to khatam the Quran in Ramadhan, as you will still get the reward for consistently reading it. Moreover, in a hadith narrated that those who have the intention to memorize Quran but die before achieving that will be raised among the huffaz (those who memorized the Quran) in the day of Qiyamah. So, just continue to read Quran and remember your niyyah or intention.

May Ramadhan bring us closer to ALLAH !
